Father of India’s ‘Green Revolution’ MS Swaminathan passes away

Professor MS Swaminathan, known as the ‘Father of the Green Revolution’ passed away at his residence in Chennai Thursday. He was 98.

Swaminathan has served administrative roles at several agricultural research facilities, including as the director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and subsequently at the International Rice Research Institute.

In 1979, he assumed the position of principal secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Swaminathan played a pivotal role in the development of high-yield paddy varieties, contributing to increased agricultural productivity among India’s low-income farmers.
